How to read smoke around Kelowna
The Central Okanagan sits in a dry Interior valley surrounded by forested slopes where local wildfires can produce heavy smoke, while regional fires elsewhere in southern B.C. or the northwestern United States can also affect the valley. Terrain can channel wind and trap particulate matter, meaning smoke intensity can vary around Okanagan Lake even within the same forecast period.
Forecast, not a measurement
FireWork estimates near-surface PM2.5 attributable to wildfire smoke. It can differ from actual conditions around Kelowna because emissions, wind, terrain, mixing, precipitation, and model timing change. Use current AQHI observations and local health advisories when conditions matter to health.
