How distance is calculated

FireRadar measures straight-line distance from the selected location to each available point record. A marker may represent an incident location rather than the nearest edge of a fire perimeter.

Official fires versus hotspots

Official wildfire incidents and NASA FIRMS thermal detections are reported separately. A hotspot is not automatically a confirmed wildfire and may correspond to an existing incident or another heat source.

Distance is not a safety rating

A nearby marker does not establish fire direction, smoke impact, road conditions, evacuation status, or personal risk. Follow official emergency authorities and local instructions.

Questions and answers

Wildfires near me FAQ

How do I find wildfires near my location in Canada?

Search a Canadian address or community, or allow browser location, to calculate straight-line distances to available official active-fire point records. The tool also shows recent out fires and satellite hotspots as separate categories.

Is the nearest wildfire distance a safety rating?

No. Distance to a source-provided point does not show fire direction, perimeter, growth, smoke impact, road conditions, evacuation status, or personal risk. Follow official emergency authorities for safety decisions.

Are satellite hotspots near me confirmed wildfires?

No. NASA FIRMS VIIRS hotspots are satellite-detected heat signals. A hotspot may relate to wildfire activity, a repeated observation, industrial heat, or another heat source.

Why might I smell smoke when no nearby wildfire marker appears?

Smoke can travel long distances, while official incident feeds and satellite observations can be delayed, incomplete, obscured by cloud, or represented by a point far from the affected area. FireRadar does not infer smoke origin from marker distance.

Who issues wildfire evacuation orders and emergency alerts?

Evacuation orders, alerts, road closures, restrictions, and emergency instructions come from the responsible provincial, territorial, municipal, First Nations, or emergency-management authority. FireRadar is informational only.
