What is included

The dashboard counts direct provincial and territorial official incident records currently available to FireRadar. CWFIS national records and NASA FIRMS satellite hotspots are excluded from the official totals to prevent double-counting.

How hectares are calculated

FireRadar sums hectares only for active official records that report a valid size. Missing sizes remain unavailable and are never converted into zero hectares.

Safety and limitations

FireRadar is an informational map, not an emergency authority, evacuation service, or fire-spread forecast. Always follow provincial, territorial, municipal, Indigenous, and emergency officials.

Questions and answers

Active wildfires in Canada FAQ

How many active wildfires are in Canada right now?

FireRadar currently counts 742 active official wildfire records across the connected provincial and territorial feeds. This number can change as source agencies publish updates.

Does the Canada wildfire count include satellite hotspots?

No. NASA FIRMS VIIRS hotspots are thermal detections and are kept separate from direct-official wildfire incident totals. CWFIS national records are also shown as a separate optional dataset to reduce duplicate counting.

Why can FireRadar totals differ from another wildfire website?

Wildfire websites can use different source systems, refresh times, status definitions, expiry windows, and duplicate-handling rules. FireRadar's official total uses connected direct provincial and territorial incident feeds and does not add satellite hotspots or CWFIS records to that count.

How often are active wildfire totals updated?

FireRadar refreshes available wildfire data approximately once per hour. Each upstream authority publishes on its own schedule, so individual records and jurisdictions can have different latest-update times.

Does the reported-hectares total include fires with missing sizes?

No. FireRadar sums only active official records with a valid reported size. Missing or invalid sizes remain unavailable and are not converted into zero hectares.
