How to read smoke around Calgary
Calgary is east of the Rockies and can receive smoke from Alberta, British Columbia, the northwestern United States, or long-range sources. Foothill winds, frontal passages, and strong mixing can improve or worsen smoke rapidly. A regional forecast plume should therefore be checked against current local air-quality observations before drawing conclusions about conditions at a specific address.
Forecast, not a measurement
FireWork estimates near-surface PM2.5 attributable to wildfire smoke. It can differ from actual conditions around Calgary because emissions, wind, terrain, mixing, precipitation, and model timing change. Use current AQHI observations and local health advisories when conditions matter to health.
