How to Read a Wildfire Map
Learn how to interpret official wildfire incidents, satellite hotspots, fire perimeters, smoke forecasts, AQHI, statuses, timestamps, and evacuation information without mixing unlike datasets.
Start by identifying what each layer represents
A named official wildfire incident, a satellite thermal hotspot, a mapped perimeter, a smoke forecast, and an AQHI observation are different datasets. They should not be counted or interpreted as if they were interchangeable evidence of the same thing.
A point marker is usually not the full fire boundary
An incident marker often represents a reported reference coordinate. A perimeter polygon, when available, is a separate mapped estimate of the fire's boundary. Satellite hotspots are heat-detection points and can cluster inside or around one incident.
Read status and time together
A status such as out of control, being held, or under control describes an operational state defined by the responsible agency. First reported, source last updated, forecast valid time, and FireRadar ingestion time mean different things. A recent page load does not make an older source record newer.
Use emergency layers and notices from the authority that owns them
A wildfire map can help build situational awareness, but evacuation orders, road closures, emergency alerts, and public-safety instructions belong to the responsible authorities. Never infer that an area is safe simply because a fire marker is distant or a map layer is empty.
Common questions
Does one satellite hotspot mean one wildfire?
No. One fire can produce many detections, and some detections can come from non-wildfire heat sources. Use official incident data for confirmed named fires where available.
Is a fire marker the centre of the fire?
Not necessarily. It may be a reference or discovery coordinate supplied by the source. A mapped perimeter is more appropriate for understanding the reported boundary when one is available.
Why do two wildfire maps show different numbers?
They may use different source feeds, update times, status rules, jurisdictions, retention windows, or satellite datasets. Compare the labels and source timestamps before comparing totals.
